2024 SVEC Education Award Winners – College

 

Tram Do, San Jose State University

Tram is a fourth-year San Jose State University (SJSU) student majoring in Aviation Flight Operations and minoring in Business. She will be graduating in Spring 2024. She aspires to become an airline pilot. She received her private pilot license and is working on her instrument rating out of Reid Hillview Airport. After graduating, she plans on focusing on her flight training, working towards becoming a Certified Flight Instructor. Since studying aviation at SJSU, she found her passion for aviation safety and human factors in aviation. She works as an Analyst Assistant for the Aviation Safety Reporting System program managed by the National Aeronautics Space Administration (NASA). Tram was the Vice President of the Women in Aviation (WIA) SJSU Chapter from Fall 2022 to Fall 2023. She represented WIA and SJSU at airport days as well as organized club events. Tram dedicates supporting women in aviation and inspiring younger generations of aviation enthusiasts. Tram wants to contribute to building a safer aviation industry as she gains more aviation experience.

  

Clara Hung, UC Berkeley

Clara is a junior at UC Berkeley studying Computer Science and Physics and conducts research in Prof. Laura Waller’s Computational Imaging Lab. After graduation, she hopes to pursue a PhD. where she is interested in exploring the joint design of optics and algorithms to develop next generation imaging systems. Additionally, she is heavily involved in the outreach sector UC Berkeley Society of Women Engineers (SWE). After leading a 10-week high school engineering program for budding female engineers and a one-day STEM program for over 80 local, underserved students, she is now the Vice President of Outreach, overseeing 6 different programs serving K-12 students across the Bay Area. Beyond Berkeley, Clara is a self-accredited cake engineer and enjoys coffee, running, and hiking.

 

 

Deema Saddik, San Jose State University

Deema is a junior studying Industrial and Systems Engineering and minoring in Computer Science at San Jose State University. Following her belief in striving for excellence, she is driven to constantly learn and improve both personally and professionally. She is excited to apply her coursework knowledge to drive continuous improvement in her internship this coming summer. She is the current Publications Director of the IISE club at her campus and has been tutoring elementary to college level STEM subjects for three years now. In her free time, she loves to spend time with her friends and family, practice calligraphy, try new coffee places, and spend time in nature, usually by going on a hike or to the beach.

 

 

SVEC College Award 2025

Application Deadline is December 20, 2024.

Award Eligibility

The Silicon Valley Engineering Council Engineering Education awards recognize undergraduate engineering and technology students for their dedication, focus, and commitment to engineering. Engineering and Technology. The one-time award is $1,000 and students may receive an SVEC Education award only once.

 
Award Criteria

– The applicant should be studying in one of the following 8 counties: San Francisco, San Mateo, Alameda, Contra Costa, Santa Clara, Monterey, San Benito and Santa Cruz.

– The applicant’s program of study is directly focused towards engineering or technology.

– The applicant has shown involvement in STEM activities (e.g., engineering, science, math, computing, or technical organizations).

– The applicant has shown involvement in community and/or social services activities.

– The applicant has letters of recommendations from two adults: faculty, organizational leaders or club leaders who can speak to applicant’s activities and performance in the above areas.

– The student exhibits strong academic performance as shown by overall GPA as well as strong recommendations from teachers.

Granting of Awards

Awardees will be notified through e-mail by January 31, 2025, and will be awarded at the SVEC Engineers Week Banquet on February 20, 2025 at Delta Hotel by Marriott in Santa Clara. It is expected but not required that awardees attend the banquet. Each recipient and one companion will be SVEC guests.
