Chasing Zero – Towards a Future of Lithium-Ion Battery Fire Prevention

September 19 @ 5:30 pm - 8:30 pm

What is BESS thermal runaway? How can it be prevented or mitigated? Please plan to attend this meeting of the Industry Applications Society to learn more. The speaker will be Rick Reynolds, Executive Vice President, ORR Protection Systems.
Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) are being installed at an ever-increasing pace in an effort to mitigate the infamous duck curve caused by the ramping of renewable energy resources. The duck curve pattern is created by the midday dip (belly) in the net load curve, followed by a steep rise in the evenings when solar generation declines.

Recently, there have been multiple reported BESS failures at utility-scale installations around the world. Just in California, in the past 3 years there have been the following incidents according to the EPRI's Battery Energy Storage System Failure Incident Database:
This presentation highlights the pressing need to enhance safety measures in lithium-ion battery usage. The presentation examines current risks, draws insights from past incidents, and explores best practices and fire suppression systems. Embracing future trends, it advocates for collaboration, compliance with standards, and continuous monitoring to achieve the vision of zero lithium-ion battery fire incidents.
