Research as Praxis Speaker Series: Graduate Student Labor in the Extractive University: Autoethnography, Workers’ Inquiry, and Burawoy’s Public Sociology

A fundamental tenet and ambition of the Extractive University Project, a group of University of California sociologists led by the late Michael Burawoy, is that critical reflection on everyday work as academics could shed light first on our institutional home and, subsequently, on the social order embedding that institution.
In this workshop, we will discuss our experiences and findings researching the university as higher education workers and consider opportunities for this approach in this political moment. This discussion is a tribute to our beloved mentor Professor Burawoy and will invite collective reflection on Michael’s work and concepts like public sociology, especially in relation to work in and on universities.
