KGB Literati: Spy Fiction and State Security in the Soviet Union
May 2 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Everybody has heard about Western spies-turned-writers, such as Ian Fleming, Graham Greene, or John Le Carré, but who were their Soviet equivalents? Drawing on materials from KGB archives and Soviet publications long out of print, Filip Kovacevic’s new book KGB Literati (forthcoming with the University of Toronto Press) provides an answer while illuminating the role of spy fiction written by Soviet state security officers in the overall Soviet counterintelligence strategy.
Born in Kotor, Montenegro, Filip Kovacevic, PhD, is a research scholar of KGB institutional history, operations, and personnel. His academic career spans more than 25 years of university teaching across Eastern Europe, Russia, and the United States. He currently teaches at the University of San Francisco and runs a popular blog on Soviet intelligence history called The Chekist Monitor.
