Judith Butler: Ian Watt Lecture 2025

Stanford’s Center for the Study of the Novel invites you to the 2025 Ian Watt Lecture featuring the celebrated philosopher, scholar, and critic Judith Butler. Butler will be speaking on György Lukács’s ambivalent reaction to Franz Kafka’s work. This event is cosponsored by Stanford’s Program in Feminist, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, the Clayman Institute for Gender Research, and Stanford Public Humanities.

Judith Butler is a Distinguished Professor in the Graduate School and former Maxine Elliot Professor in the Department of Comparative Literature and the Program in Critical Theory at the University of California, Berkeley. They served as Founding Director of the Program in Critical Theory as well as the International Consortium of Critical Theory Programs. They are the author of many books, including the foundational work Gender Trouble: Feminism and the Suberversion of Identity and others ranging from their first book: Subjects of Desire: Hegelian Reflections in Twentieth-Century France (1987) to their most recent: Who’s Afraid of Gender (2024).
