Innovation and Allyship: Case studies from India and the United States

January 28 @ 8:00 pm - 9:00 pm

How do we co-design with communities to design innovations and policies that increase health equity?
When developed and implemented, innovations hold the potential to either narrow or widen the health inequity gap. To ensure that innovations reach the people who need them most and serve the needs of the communities they are designed with and for, our talk this month will focus on the importance of allyship, co-design, and designing for context through two case studies.
Our first case study is about affordable ostomy care in India. Ivana Llobet is a Stanford Biodesign Innovation Fellow with a background in biomedical engineering and design. In this case study, she will highlight the importance of “doing more with less for more” and what being a good ally in Global Health means to her.
The second case study will focus on co-design and policy by examining the role of policies that historically excluded direct care workers in the US. Stanford Biodesign policy fellow Charlene Kuo will reflect on lessons learned through working with care workers to co-design policy recommendations that reflect their needs.
